Taking Notes from Oral Presentations
Note-taking means writing down important information while someone is speaking. When a teacher, guest speaker, or classmate gives an oral presentation, we cannot remember everything they say. Taking notes helps us keep the main ideas and important details so we can study or use them later.
- To remember what we heard
- To study later for exams
- To share information with others who were absent
- To organize our thoughts
- Listen carefully – Pay full attention to the speaker
- Identify main ideas – Look for the most important points
- Use abbreviations – Shorten words to write faster
- Write key words – Not every word, just the important ones
- Use symbols – Draw simple signs like → (means/arrow), ✓ (yes), ✗ (no)
- Prepare – Have your exercise book and pencil ready before the presentation starts
- Write the title – At the top of your page, write what the presentation is about
- Listen for main ideas – Focus on what the speaker says that is most important
- Write key words – Don't write complete sentences. Write only the important words
- Use abbreviations – Shorten common words (e.g., "govt" for government, "info" for information)
- Review your notes – After the presentation, read them and add anything you remember
Imagine your headteacher is giving an assembly talk about school fees:
"Dear students, the school fees for this term are 150,000 Tanzanian shillings. Payment deadline is the 15th of next month. Students who pay on time will receive a free textbook. Please bring your payment slip to the office."
Your notes could look like this:
- School fees: 150,000 TZS
- Deadline: 15th next month
- Pay early → get free textbook
- Bring slip to office
Notice how we write only the important words, not every word the speaker said.
- Practice using abbreviations at home
- Write clearly so you can read your notes later
- Leave space between points
- Review your notes the same day
- If you miss something, ask the speaker after
In Tanzania, you will use note-taking skills many times in daily life. When your mtaa chairman announces information about a community meeting or a health worker talks about vaccination schedules at the dispensary, taking notes helps you remember the important details. Even when listening to your radio at home, you can write down phone numbers, prices, or event dates that you need to remember later.
