When we speak English, we use vowel sounds. Some vowel sounds are short, and some are long. The difference between them is important because it changes the meaning of words. For example, "pot" (short vowel) is different from "port" (long vowel).
Short vowel sounds are quick and sharp. Here are the main short vowel sounds:
| Sound | Example Words |
|---|---|
| /ɪ/ | ship, lip, pin, dip |
| /ʊ/ | full, put, pull, bull |
| /ʌ/ | cut, mud, run, hug |
| /æ/ | mat, cat, bag, hat |
| /e/ | bed, let, bet, get |
| /ɒ/ | pot, lock, top, mop |
Notice: Short vowels are pronounced quickly. The mouth does not stretch.
Long vowel sounds take a longer time to say. They often sound like the letter name. Here are the main long vowel sounds:
| Sound | Example Words |
|---|---|
| /iː/ | feel, deep, heal, see |
| /ɔː/ | port, door, ball, talk |
| /uː/ | fool, pool, food, moon |
| /ɑː/ | park, dark, arm, car |
| /ɔː/ | bird, work, word, first |
Notice: Long vowels often have two letters together, like ea, oo, ar, or.
Look at these pairs. The spelling is similar, but the sound is different:
- pot (short /ɒ/) — port (long /ɔː/)
- cut (short /ʌ/) — cart (long /ɑː/)
- fit (short /ɪ/) — feet (long /iː/)
- pull (short /ʊ/) — pool (long /uː/)
- bed (short /e/) — bead (long /iː/)
- hat (short /æ/) — heart (long /ɑː/)
When you read a sentence, listen carefully to each word. Check if the vowel is short or long. Here are some sentences to practise:
Sentences with Short Vowels
- I saw a ship.
- The cat is on the mat.
- Tutu likes to bet.
- The pot is full.
Sentences with Long Vowels
- I saw a sheep on the shore.
- The thief is a fool.
- There is a door in the church.
- The bird flew over the park.
Mixed Sentences (Short and Long)
- I put the bird on the bed.
- The cat is in the car.
- He cut the mango into three pieces.
Your teacher will show you the "touch and say" method:
- Touch each word as you say it.
- Say the word clearly, paying attention to the vowel sound.
- If you hear a long vowel, stretch the sound (like "heeeeelp").
- If you hear a short vowel, say it quickly (like "help!").
Try reading these words first, then put them into sentences:
Short vowels: ship, bed, hat, pot, cut, run, lip, cat, bet, top
Long vowels: feel, hear, port, door, pool, park, bird, farm, heal, dark
Now read these sentences:
- The cat sat on the mat.
- I put the book on the desk.
- The bird is in the tree.
- He bought a coat at the shop.
In Tanzania, you use short and long vowels every day when you speak with your family and friends at the market or in school. For example, when you go to the duka to buy mbaf (rice) or viazi (potatoes), saying the words clearly helps others understand you. If you say "pot" (short vowel) instead of "port" (long vowel) when asking for directions to a place, people will know exactly where you want to go. Practising these sounds helps you communicate clearly in English, which is important for your future work in shops, hospitals, or offices.
