Reading to Identify Basic Components and Contents
When we read a text, we need to understand not just the words, but also what the text is made of and what it tells us. This means finding the main idea (what the whole text is about) and the supporting ideas (the smaller details that help explain the main idea).
A text has several parts that help us understand it:
- Title – tells us what the text might be about before we read
- Main idea – the most important message or idea in the text
- Supporting ideas – smaller details that add information to the main idea
- Characters – the people or animals in a story
- Setting – where and when the story happens
- Events – what happens in the story (beginning, middle, end)
The main idea is the key message of the whole text. It tells us what the author wants us to understand. Supporting ideas are details that explain or prove the main idea.
Example from a Story
Read this short story:
Road accident
Last week, I visited my aunt in a nearby district. On the way, our bus stopped suddenly. We saw four people getting off the bus. A schoolboy was lying on the road. He was hurt badly. A car had hit him while crossing the road. Next to him was a school bag. A man opened it and found an exercise book. On the cover, the name 'Baraka Musa' was written. Inside the book, there was a phone number. The man called Baraka's father.
Baraka's father came quickly in a taxi. They took Baraka to hospital. Later, we heard that Baraka got better and he was discharged.
Finding the main idea:
Look at the whole story. Which sentence best captures everything that happened?
- A. Baraka's father arrived by taxi.
- B. A schoolboy had been hit by a car and rushed to hospital.
- C. A man opened Baraka's school bag.
- D. The bus stopped suddenly.
The correct answer is B. The whole story is about a schoolboy (Baraka) who was hit by a car and was taken to the hospital. This is the main idea.
Finding supporting ideas:
Supporting ideas are smaller details that support the main idea. From the story, which of these are supporting ideas?
- The boy's name was Baraka Musa. (This supports the main idea by giving us details.)
- The bus stopped suddenly. (This is part of the story but not the main focus.)
- Baraka was rushed to hospital. (This supports the main idea.)
When you read a text, follow these steps:
- Read the title – What do you think the text will be about?
- Read the whole text carefully – Do not skip any part.
- Ask yourself: What is the most important idea in this text? (This is the main idea.)
- Ask yourself: What details help explain or support the main idea? (These are supporting ideas.)
- Identify other components: Who are the characters? Where does the story happen? What happens first, next, and last?
Read the story about Grandmother's pumpkin and answer these questions:
- What is the main idea of the story?
- What are two supporting ideas that help explain the main idea?
- Who are the characters in the story?
- Where and when does the story take place?
- The main idea is the most important message in a text.
- Supporting ideas are details that explain the main idea.
- To identify basic components, look for the title, characters, setting, and events.
- Always read the whole text first before deciding on the main idea.
When you read a notice at your school or a short news article in a Tanzanian newspaper, you use these same skills. For example, if you read a notice about a school trip to Mikumi National Park, you will find the main idea (what the trip is about) and supporting details (the date, time, what to bring, and cost in Tanzanian shillings). These skills help you understand information correctly and make good decisions in daily life.
