Identifying Major and Minor Ideas in a Story

What Are Major and Minor Ideas?

A major idea (also called the main idea) is the most important point or message of a story. It tells us what the whole story is about. A minor idea (also called a supporting idea) is a smaller detail that helps explain or support the main idea.

Think of the main idea as the heart of the story. Everything else in the story supports or explains that heart.

How to Find the Main Idea

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is the story mostly about?
  • What happens in the story that is most important?
  • If I had to tell someone what the story is about in one sentence, what would I say?

The answer is usually the main idea. Supporting ideas are details like:

  • Names of people or places
  • Small events that happened
  • Extra information that makes the story interesting

Worked Example: "Road Accident" Story

Read this story carefully:

Last week, I visited my aunt in a nearby district. On the way, our bus stopped suddenly. We saw four people getting off the bus. A schoolboy was lying on the road. He was hurt badly. A car had hit him while crossing the road. Next to him was a school bag. A man opened it and found an exercise book. On the cover, the name 'Baraka Musa' was written. Inside the book, there was a phone number. The man called Baraka's father.

Baraka's father came quickly in a taxi. They took Baraka to hospital. Later, we heard that Baraka got better and he was discharged.

Finding the Main Idea

Look at the options:

  • A. Baraka's father arrived by taxi.
  • B. A schoolboy had been hit by a car and rushed to hospital.
  • C. A man opened Baraka's school bag.
  • D. The bus stopped suddenly.

The main idea is B — A schoolboy had been hit by a car and rushed to hospital. This tells us what the whole story is about.

Finding Supporting Ideas

Look at the options:

  • A. A schoolboy was hit by a car and rushed to hospital. (This is the main idea)
  • B. The boy's name was Baraka Musa. (This is a supporting detail)
  • C. The story is about road accidents. (This is too general)
  • D. The writer visited his or her aunt. (This is a small detail)

The supporting idea is B — The boy's name was Baraka Musa. This is a detail that supports the main story.

Practice: Picking Main and Supporting Ideas

From these statements about the story:

  • A. Baraka was hit by a car while crossing the road. (Main Idea)
  • B. Baraka's name was found on his exercise book. (Supporting Idea)
  • C. The bus stopped suddenly. (Supporting Idea)
  • D. Baraka was rushed to hospital. (Supporting Idea)
  • E. Baraka's father was called using a phone number found in the bag. (Supporting Idea)

Tips for Identifying Ideas

  1. Read the whole story first — do not decide the main idea after reading just one sentence.

  2. Ask "What is this story mostly about?" — the answer is usually the main idea.

  3. Look for the most important event — this is often the main idea.

  4. Supporting ideas answer questions like: Who? What name? Where? When? These are smaller details.

  5. Check if the detail tells the whole story — if not, it is probably a supporting idea.

Real-life application

In everyday life in Tanzania, you use this skill when listening to news on the radio or watching videos on a phone. For example, when someone tells you about what happened at the market or shares a story about a farm event, you can quickly identify the main point and remember the important details. This helps you share accurate information with others and avoid mixing up the most important news with small details.
