Expressing Future Actions
When we talk about things that will happen or we will do in the future, we use special words called future tense markers. In English, we mainly use will, shall, and going to to show future actions.
We use will when we:
- Make a prediction about the future
- Make a promise
- Decide something at the moment of speaking (spontaneous decision)
Form
Subject + will + base verb
Examples
- I will help you with your homework tomorrow.
- She will go to Morogoro next week.
- The weather will be sunny tomorrow.
- I will always respect my teachers.
We use going to when we:
- Talk about plans we have already made
- Talk about intentions we have already decided
- Predict something based on evidence we can see now
Form
Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb
Examples
- I am going to visit my grandmother this weekend.
- They are going to build a new shop near the market.
- Look at those clouds! It is going to rain.
- My father is going to buy a new bicycle.
We use shall mainly to:
- Make suggestions
- Offer to do something
- Ask for opinions (formal)
Form
Subject + shall + base verb
Examples
- Shall we go to the library together?
- Shall I carry your bag for you?
- What shall we buy for the party?
| Marker | When to use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Will | Predictions, promises, spontaneous decisions | I will finish my project. |
| Going to | Plans already made, intentions | I am going to study hard. |
| Shall | Suggestions, offers | Shall we play football? |
Complete these sentences using will, going to, or shall:
- I __________________ (visit) my aunt in Dar es Salaam next month.
- The teacher __________________ (give) us a test tomorrow.
- __________________ we __________________ (play) after school?
- Look at that car! It __________________ (hit) the dog!
- I promise I __________________ (work) harder this year.
In Tanzania, you might use these structures when making plans with friends, such as saying "We are going to go to the safari park during the school holiday" or when talking about future events like "The new market in town will open next month." Being able to express future actions clearly helps you communicate about your plans, hopes, and predictions in everyday life.
