Constructing Short Passages with Vocabulary from Different Settings
A passage is a short piece of writing that tells a story or gives information about something. It uses complete sentences that are connected together to make sense.
A setting is a place where things happen. Every setting has its own vocabulary — words that are commonly used there.
Common Settings and Their Vocabulary
- Home: bed, table, chair, cooking pot, blanket, lamp, bucket, broom
- School: chalkboard, book, pen, desk, uniform, teacher, bell, playground
- Market: tomatoes, onions, maize, fruits, scale, basket, money, seller
- Farm: cows, goats, chickens, hoe, watering can, seeds, crops, fence
Step 1: Choose a Setting
Decide which place you want to write about.
Step 2: List Vocabulary for That Setting
Think of words that belong in that place.
Step 3: Create a Simple Poem or Song First
Put your words into a short rhyming pattern. This helps you organize your ideas.
Step 4: Expand Into a Passage
Turn your poem into full sentences that tell a small story or describe the setting.
Setting: The Market
Step 1 - List vocabulary: tomatoes, onions, bananas, seller, buyers, money, basket, scale, fresh
Step 2 - Create a poem/song:
At the market, what do I see? Red tomatoes looking at me! Yellow bananas, white onions too, Fresh and cheap for me and you!
Step 3 - Expand into a passage:
Every morning, my mother goes to the market. She takes her basket and some money. At the market, there are many sellers. They sell red tomatoes, yellow bananas, and white onions. The tomatoes look fresh and red. The bananas are sweet and yellow. My mother buys vegetables for our lunch. She pays the seller with money. The market is busy and noisy, but we love the fresh food!
- Use vocabulary that belongs to your chosen setting
- Write complete sentences with subjects and verbs
- Connect your sentences so they flow smoothly
- Start with a clear idea and end with a conclusion
- Keep your passage short (3-5 sentences for Standard V)
Choose a setting you know well — your home, school, or the farm. Make a list of five objects you see there. Write a poem with those words, then turn it into a short passage of 4-5 sentences.
In Tanzania, you will use this skill when you write shopping lists for your family, describe what you see at the sokoni to a friend, or write a simple note about what you did at home. For example, if you help your mother buy groceries at the market in Mwanza or Arusha, you can write a short passage describing the fresh mboga you bought, the price in Tanzanian shillings, and what you will cook at home. This helps you communicate clearly in everyday life.
