Learning Words in Different Places
When we learn English, we connect words with the things we see around us. Different places have different things, and each place has its own special words. This helps us speak about the world around us.
Why Context Matters
A context is a place or situation where we find things. The same object can be in different places, but we use different words to describe it. For example:
- At home we say bed
- At the hospital we say patient's bed
Knowing which words go with which place helps us speak correctly.
Places and Their Objects
Here are common places and the things you find in each one:
Home
- bed, table, chair, lamp, kitchen, bathroom, door, window
Hospital
- doctor, nurse, medicine, patient, bed, injection, waiting room
Market
- seller, buyer, vegetables, fruits, money, scale, bag
Bus Station
- bus, driver, ticket, passenger, platform, luggage, schedule
Worked Example
Look at the picture: A doctor is holding a stethoscope at the hospital.
Question: Where do we use the word "doctor"?
Answer: We use the word "doctor" at the hospital. A doctor helps sick people. We do not say "doctor" at the market or bus station.
How to Match Words with Places
- Look at the place – Is it a home, hospital, market, or bus station?
- Find the object – What things are in that place?
- Say the word – Practice saying the word while looking at the object.
Quick Practice
Draw a line to match the word with the correct place:
| Word | Place |
|---|---|
| ticket | bus station |
| nurse | hospital |
| vegetables | market |
| chair | home |
Answers: ticket → bus station; nurse → hospital; vegetables → market; chair → home
Real-life application
When you go to the market with your mother or father in Tanzania, you will hear sellers using words like "bei" (price), "kilo," and "jumbo." Knowing the English words for market things helps you count, ask for prices, and understand how buying and selling works in both Swahili and English at the local market.
