How to Write Dictated Words
When someone dictates words to you, you must listen carefully and write exactly what you hear. This skill helps you become a good writer and speller.
-
Listen carefully – Pay full attention to the speaker. Do not look around or talk.
-
Hear each word clearly – Listen for the beginning, middle, and ending sounds of every word.
-
Spell the word in your mind – Think about how the word is spelled before you write it.
-
Write neatly – Form each letter correctly and leave spaces between words.
-
Check your work – After writing, read what you wrote to make sure it looks right.
Teacher says: "Write the word market."
Student writes: market
Teacher says: "Write the sentence: I buy mangoes at the market."
Student writes: I buy mangoes at the market.
Here are simple words you may practice writing:
- cat, dog, house, tree, book, pen
- mother, father, sister, brother
- Tanzania, Dar es Salaam, village
- mango, banana, rice, ugali, tea
- one, two, three, four, five
- Sit where you can hear clearly.
- If you miss a word, ask the teacher to say it again.
- Practice spelling words every day.
- Read your writing aloud to check for mistakes.
- Do not guess the spelling — listen carefully.
- Do not forget spaces between words.
- Do not skip letters or add extra letters.
When you go to the market with your mother or father, you may need to write down a shopping list or take a message. For example, if someone tells you "Buy two kilograms of rice for 6,000 shillings," you can practice writing these words correctly. This skill also helps you when you send a text message or write a note to a friend in Swahili or English.
