Sources of Population and Settlements Data
Population and settlement data are information that tells us about the people living in a certain area and how they are organized. This data helps governments and planners make important decisions about schools, hospitals, roads, and other services.
A census is an official count of all people living in a country at a particular time. It collects information about age, gender, occupation, education, and where people live.
Types of Census
- De facto census: Counts people where they are found on census day, even if that is not their usual home.
- De jure census: Counts people at their usual or permanent place of residence.
Characteristics of a Census
- It is complete — every person in the country is counted.
- It is simultaneous — all information is collected at the same time.
- It is periodic — it is done at regular intervals, usually every 10 years in Tanzania.
- It is official — conducted by the government through the National Bureau of Statistics.
Importance of Census Data
- Helps the government plan for schools, hospitals, and housing.
- Shows how many children need primary education.
- Helps distribute government funds fairly to different regions.
- Provides information for election planning.
- Helps researchers study population trends and migration patterns.
Birth registration is the recording of a baby's birth at a local government office. It gives the child an official identity.
Death registration records when a person dies. It helps the government track population changes and health trends.
In Tanzania, these registrations are done at the Ward Executive Office or the District Registrar's Office. Birth certificates are important for children to enroll in school, while death certificates are needed for legal matters.
Immigration records track people who move into or out of a country. These include:
- Immigration: People entering a country to live or work.
- Emigration: People leaving their home country to live elsewhere.
These records are kept at border points like airports, seaports, and land borders. The immigration department records passport details, purpose of travel, and duration of stay.

| Source | What it records | Who collects it |
|---|---|---|
| Census | All people in the country | National Bureau of Statistics |
| Birth/Death Registration | Individual births and deaths | Ward/District offices |
| Immigration Records | People entering/leaving the country | Immigration Department |
In Tanzania, population data from the census helps your district know how many new classrooms need to be built. For example, if the census shows that Mbeya Region has many children aged 6–12, the government can plan to build more primary schools there. Birth registration is also needed when you apply for a place in secondary school — without a birth certificate, a child may miss the opportunity to continue their education.
