The Relationship Between Earth's Relief and Natural Vegetation
Relief refers to the shape and features of the Earth's surface – whether an area is flat like a plain, hilly like a plateau, or steep like a mountain. Natural vegetation is the naturally growing plants in an area, including grasses, shrubs, and trees that were not planted by people.
The relief of an area strongly influences what type of natural vegetation can grow there. This is because different relief features affect rainfall, temperature, and soil conditions, which determine which plants can survive.

Mountains
Mountain areas are usually steep and rocky. At high altitudes, temperatures are cold and the air is thin, so only small grasses and shrubs can grow. The wind is also stronger on mountains, which makes it harder for tall trees to survive. In Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro has different vegetation zones – bamboo forests at middle levels, heath vegetation higher up, and only grasses and moss near the summit.
Plateaus and Highlands
Plateaus are flat, raised areas of land. In Tanzania, places like the Southern Highlands (Mbeya, Iringa) and parts of Arusha have high plateaus. These areas usually receive more rainfall than lower areas, so they often have forests or dense savannah vegetation with tall grasses and miombo trees.
Plains and Lowlands
Plains are flat or gently rolling areas at low elevation. Tanzania has large plains, especially in the central and southern regions. Areas with low rainfall on plains, like Dodoma and Singida, have savannah grasslands with scattered trees and shrubs. Areas near rivers or lakes on plains can support denser vegetation because water is more available.
Valleys
Valleys are low areas between hills or mountains. They often have fertile soil and access to water from rivers or springs. In Tanzania, valley areas like the Kilombero Valley and the Usangu Wetland have dense vegetation, including swamps, forests, and tall grasses.
Coastal plains (near Dar es Salaam and Tanga): These low, flat areas near the Indian Ocean have mangrove forests along the coast and savannah vegetation inland.
Central plateau (Dodoma, Singida, Shinyanga): These areas are dry plains with seasonal rains. They are covered mainly by savannah grasslands with scattered acacia trees and thorny shrubs.
Western regions (Tabora, Kigoma): These areas have undulating land with savannah vegetation. The miombo woodlands here consist of trees like mchenga and mkarakati mixed with tall grasses.
Mountain regions (Kilimanjaro, Meru, Southern Highlands): The slopes have different vegetation at different heights, from forests at the base to heath and alpine vegetation near the peaks.
- Relief features like mountains, plateaus, plains, and valleys create different conditions for plant growth
- Altitude affects temperature – higher areas are cooler and support different plants than lower areas
- Slope affects water drainage – steep slopes lose water quickly, while flat areas hold water longer
- Valleys and lowlands often have richer soils and more water, supporting denser vegetation
- In Tanzania, you can see this relationship clearly when you travel from the coast to the highlands, or from wet mountain areas to dry central plains
When you travel from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, you can observe how the landscape changes – from the coastal plains with mangroves and tall grasses, through the miombo woodlands around Morogoro, to the drier savannah grasslands around Dodoma. Understanding this relationship helps farmers know which crops to plant in different areas, and it helps the government plan how to protect forests and wildlife in the right places.
