- Show the direction of different objects using the four and eight main cardinal points of the earth (recognise four cardinal points, draw four cardinal points, use four cardinal points to show directions, recognise eight cardinal points, use eight cardinal points to show direction)
- Explain the concept of map (meaning, characteristics and significance)
- Draw a simple map to show the classroom environment
- Draw simple maps of the school, ward, district, region and Tanzania
- Use a simple map in determining a location, direction, distance and giving and following instructions
- Use map of Tanzania to show administrative boundaries (regions) and earth's relief (mountains, valleys, great rivers, lakes and oceans)
The Concept of a Map
A map is a drawing that shows the locations of different features on the Earth's surface on paper or any flat surface. Maps help us to see and understand places without actually visiting them.
The study of drawing maps is called cartography, and a person who draws maps is called a cartographer.

Maps have several important characteristics that make them useful:
Features Shown on a Map
Maps can show many different features, including:
- Roads – paths that lead to different places
- Buildings – houses, schools, hospitals, and offices
- Water bodies – rivers, lakes, and oceans
- Land features – mountains, valleys, and hills
- Green areas – forests, national parks, and farms
- Boundaries – city, ward, or country borders
- Sports fields – football grounds and playgrounds
A cartographer decides which features to include based on what the map users need. Only the most important features are shown to keep the map simple and easy to read.
Map Symbols

A map cannot show things exactly as they are in reality. Instead, it uses map symbols – small drawings that represent real objects. For example, a tree might be shown as a green symbol, a road as a black line, and water as blue.
All symbols used on a map are explained in the map key (also called a legend), which helps us understand what each symbol means.
Map Title and Direction
Every good map has:
- A title that tells us what the map shows
- A North arrow that shows direction (North, South, East, West)
Map Scale
The scale shows the relationship between distance on the map and the real distance on the ground. For example, a scale of 1:50,000 means that 1 centimetre on the map represents 50,000 centimetres (or 500 metres) on the ground.
Maps are very important in our daily lives because they:
- Help us find our way from one place to another
- Show us where important places like schools, hospitals, and markets are located
- Help planners decide where to build new roads and buildings
- Help farmers know the boundaries of their land
- Help us learn about different places, even those far away
- Are used by the government for administrative purposes (wards, districts, and regions)
Look at this simple map of Mbuga Primary School:
The map key shows:
- 🏫 = Classroom building
- 🌳 = Trees
- 🚪 = Gate
- ⚽ = Football field
From this map, we can see:
- The school has one classroom building in the centre
- There are trees on the western side
- The main gate is on the eastern side
- The football field is on the southern side
This simple map helps us understand the layout of the school without walking around it.
Draw a simple map of your classroom showing:
- The teacher's table and chair
- The door and windows
- Students' desks
- A football (if there is one)
Remember to:
- Give your map a title
- Add a North arrow
- Draw a key showing what each symbol means
In Tanzania, maps are used in many practical situations. For example, when a farmer wants to know the boundaries of his shamba (farm), he looks at a map of the village to see where his land ends and his neighbour's begins. Similarly, when travelling from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, people use road maps to find the best route. Maps also help the government know how many wards and districts are in each region for planning and administration.
