Using ICT to Draw and Arrange Shapes in a Logical Sequence
A pattern is a set of items arranged in a logical sequence. When items follow a pattern, we can easily predict what comes next. Patterns are found everywhere around us:
- Natural patterns: Zebra stripes, flower petals, waves on the beach
- Man-made patterns: Chessboard, tiled floors, brick walls
A logical sequence means the items follow a clear rule. For example, if we have circles arranged from small to large, we know the next circle should be even larger.
The Paint program is a simple tool used to draw shapes on a computer. Follow these steps to open it:
Opening Paint in Windows
- Click on the Windows Start button
- Type Paint in the search bar
- Click on Paint to open it
The Paint window will appear with a drawing area and tools on the toolbar.
Drawing Different Shapes
To draw shapes in Paint, use these tools:
- Rectangle tool: Draws rectangles and squares
- Circle/Ellipse tool: Draws circles and ovals
- Triangle tool: Draws triangles
Steps to draw a shape:
- Click on the shape tool you want to use
- Place your cursor on the drawing area
- Click and hold the mouse button, then drag to create the shape
- Release the mouse to finish the shape

When we arrange shapes in a logical sequence, we follow a rule. Here are common types of logical sequences:
Example 1: Size Sequence
Draw circles from smallest to largest:
- First circle: Small (at the top)
- Second circle: Medium (in the middle)
- Third circle: Large (at the bottom)
This follows the rule: each circle is bigger than the one before it.
Example 2: Colour Sequence
Arrange shapes with repeating colours:
- Shape 1: Red
- Shape 2: Yellow
- Shape 3: Red
- Shape 4: Yellow
This follows the rule: colours repeat in pairs (Red, Yellow, Red, Yellow...).
Example 3: Brick Wall Pattern
A brick wall pattern follows a logical sequence:
- First row: Gray and yellow bricks
- Second row: Orange and blue bricks (offset from the first row)
- Continue alternating rows
This follows the rule: each row is offset from the row below it, and colours alternate.
Let us draw circles arranged from small to large on a triangular slope:
Steps:
- Draw the slope: Use the triangle tool to draw a right-angled triangle slanting downward from left to right
- Draw the first circle: At the top of the slope, draw a small circle
- Draw the second circle: In the middle of the slope, draw a medium-sized circle (larger than the first)
- Draw the third circle: At the bottom of the slope, draw a large circle (larger than the second)
Now colour the shapes:
- Colour the triangle Red
- Colour the smallest circle Yellow
- Colour the medium circle Purple
- Colour the largest circle Rose
The logical sequence here is: small → medium → large (increasing size from top to bottom).
Always save your drawing when you finish:
- Click on File
- Click Save as
- Choose a picture format (PNG, JPEG, or BMP)
- Select where to save (for example, Documents)
- Enter a name for your file (for example, "Shape Pattern 1")
- Click Save
- A pattern is items arranged in a logical sequence so we can predict what comes next
- Use the Paint program to draw different shapes (rectangles, circles, triangles)
- Arranging shapes follows rules such as: size order, colour order, or position order
- Always save your work after drawing
- Drag means to select and move to a particular location
In everyday life in Tanzania, arranging shapes in logical sequences is very useful. For example, when a mason builds a brick wall, they arrange bricks in a logical pattern (offset rows with alternating colours) to make the wall strong and beautiful. Similarly, shop owners arranging products on shelves from smallest to largest or by colour create neat displays that help customers find what they need quickly. Understanding patterns helps us organize things better at home, at school, and at work.
