Machines: Making Work Easier
A machine is a tool or device that helps us do work more easily. Machines make tasks simpler by reducing the amount of effort (force) needed to move or lift objects. When we use a machine, we can move heavy things with less force, reach high places, or cut materials quickly.

There are two main types of machines: simple machines and complex machines.
Simple Machines
A simple machine is a basic tool that performs one simple task to make work easier. It uses only one kind of force to operate. Simple machines are easy to use and are found everywhere.
Examples of simple machines:
- Spade – used for digging soil
- Hammer – used for driving nails into wood
- Wheelbarrow – used for carrying heavy loads
- Scissors – used for cutting paper or cloth
- Bottle opener – used for opening bottles
- Crowbar – used for lifting or prying objects apart
- Pulley – used for lifting heavy objects like water from a well
- Knife – used for cutting fruits, vegetables, and other items
Complex Machines
A complex machine (also called a compound machine) is made by combining two or more simple machines together. These machines can perform more complicated tasks.
Examples of complex machines:
- Sewing machine – uses gears, levers, and needles to sew fabric quickly
- Bicycle – uses wheels, gears, pedals, and chains to help a person move
- Motor vehicle – uses many simple machines working together to transport people and goods
Machines help us in many ways in our daily lives:
- Lifting heavy objects – Wheelbarrows and pulleys help carry things that are too heavy to lift by hand.
- Moving things to higher places – Ladders and ramps make it easier to raise objects without using too much effort.
- Cutting and splitting – Knives, axes, and scissors cut materials easily.
- Turning things – Wrenches (spanners) help tighten or loosen nuts and bolts.
- Balancing objects – Seesaws and beam balances help measure weight and move objects.
In Tanzania, machines are used everywhere in everyday life. For example, when farmers use a spade to dig soil for planting, they are using a simple machine that makes digging easier. Similarly, market vendors in Dar es Salaam use wheelbarrows to carry heavy bags of rice or maize from trucks to their stalls—without a wheelbarrow, they would need to make many trips carrying heavy loads by hand, which would take much more time and energy. Machines help people work faster and with less effort.
