Combustion
Combustion is a process in which a flammable substance reacts quickly with oxygen and releases energy in the form of heat and light. This is what we call burning. When combustion happens, we see flames and feel heat.
For example, when you light a match and touch it to a piece of dry paper, the paper catches fire. The paper (fuel) combines with oxygen from the air. This reaction releases heat and light. We call this process combustion.

For combustion to happen, three things must be present together. These are called the fire triangle:
1. Fuel — Any material that can burn. Fuel can be solid (wood, paper, charcoal), liquid (oil, petrol), or gas (cooking gas).
2. Oxygen — A gas found in air. It is needed for burning to happen. Without oxygen, nothing can burn.
3. Heat — A source of heat to start the burning. A match, spark, or flame can provide this heat.
If any one of these three is missing, combustion cannot occur. This is why we can put out fire by removing fuel, blocking air, or using water to remove heat.
Complete Combustion
Complete combustion happens when there is enough oxygen. The fuel burns completely and produces a bright flame with little smoke.
Example from the textbook: Burning wood in an open fireplace. The wood burns completely and turns into ash. This is what happens when we cook using firewood or charcoal in an open stove — the fuel burns fully and gives us bright flames for cooking.
Incomplete Combustion
Incomplete combustion happens when there is not enough oxygen. The fuel does not burn completely, and it produces more smoke and soot. Sometimes the fuel turns into charcoal.
Example from the textbook: Making charcoal. When wood is covered with soil and burned with limited air, it does not burn completely. Instead, it turns into charcoal. This is incomplete combustion.
Advantages (Good Effects)
- Cooking: Combustion provides heat for cooking food.
- Heating: Fire helps warm our homes during cold weather.
- Industry: Fire is used in factories to melt metals and make steel.
- Drying: Heat from combustion helps dry crops and preserved food.
Disadvantages (Bad Effects)
- Destroying property: Fire can burn houses, schools, and other buildings.
- Environmental damage: Burning forests destroys animal homes and plants.
- Soil damage: Forest fires cause soil erosion and loss of soil fertility.
- Air pollution: Burning fuels releases harmful gases into the air.
To protect yourself from fire accidents:
- Keep flammable materials (paper, cloth, chemicals) away from flames.
- Never leave burning candles or fires unattended.
- Use tools like tongs when handling hot objects.
- Wear protective gloves when handling hot cookware.
- Always make sure fire is completely put out before leaving the area.
Combustion is the process of burning fuel with oxygen to produce heat and light. It needs three things: fuel, oxygen, and heat. When there is enough oxygen, complete combustion happens with bright flames. When there is little oxygen, incomplete combustion happens with smoke. Combustion is useful for cooking and heating, but it can also cause damage if not handled carefully.
In Tanzania, combustion is used every day when cooking food. For example, when a mother uses a charcoal stove (jiko) to cook ugali, the charcoal (fuel) combines with oxygen from the air. The heat produced cooks the food. Knowing how combustion works helps us understand why we should never leave the fire unattended and why we need air to keep the fire burning.
