- Explain the concept of science (meaning and branches of science)
- Describe the human sensory organs
Sense organs are special parts of our body that help us detect and recognize different things in our environment. These organs receive information (called stimuli) from the world around us and send it to the brain for interpretation. Human beings have five sense organs: the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin.

| Sense Organ | Main Function |
|---|---|
| Eyes | To see and identify things |
| Ears | To hear different sounds |
| Nose | To smell different substances |
| Tongue | To taste different foods |
| Skin | To feel touch, heat, cold, pressure, and pain |
The eyes are located on the front of the face. They help us see colours, shapes, and objects around us.
Parts of the Eye and Their Functions
| Part | Function |
|---|---|
| Eyebrows | Prevent sweat, dust, and objects from entering the eye |
| Eyelids | Cover the eye to protect it |
| Eyelashes | Stop dust from entering the eye |
| Pupil | Allows light to enter the eye |
| Iris | Controls the amount of light entering the eye |
| Retina | Changes light into signals that the brain can understand |
| Lens | Focuses light onto the retina |
Worked Example: When Mary walks to school in the morning, she uses her eyes to see the path, recognize her friends, and notice the green colour of the trees. The pupil lets light in, the iris adjusts how much light enters, and the retina sends signals to her brain so she can understand what she sees.
Caring for the Eyes
- Read under enough light
- Clean your eyes with clean water
- Do not rub your eyes with dirty hands
- Wear glasses only if an optician advises you to
The tongue is used for tasting food and drinks. It has special cells called taste buds that can detect five different tastes.
Where Each Taste Is Detected on the Tongue
| Part of Tongue | Taste Detected |
|---|---|
| Tip of the tongue | Sweet |
| Two front sides | Salty |
| Middle part | Umami (taste found in meat, milk, fish) |
| Back sides | Sour |
| Back of the tongue | Bitter |
Worked Example: When Amina eats a ripe banana, the sweet taste is detected at the tip of her tongue. If she drinks lemon juice, the sour taste is detected at the back sides of her tongue.
Caring for the Tongue
- Clean your mouth and tongue regularly
- Avoid very hot or cold foods that can damage taste buds
- Do not taste unknown substances (they may be poisonous)
- Do not pierce your tongue
The nose is used for smelling. It has two holes called nostrils. The nose also helps us breathe air into and out of the lungs.
Caring for the Nose
- Clean your nose using clean water
- Do not insert objects into your nose
The skin covers the entire body. It is a sense organ that feels different conditions such as heat, cold, touch, texture, pressure, pain, and vibrations.
Caring for the Skin
- Take a bath regularly to keep your skin clean
- Use clean water, soap, and a sponge when bathing
- Dry your body with a clean towel after bathing
- Apply body oil or jelly after bathing
- Eat nutritious food and drink enough water
The ears are used for hearing. They can recognize different sounds such as voices, music, and noise.
How We Hear
- The outer ear collects sound waves and directs them inside
- The sound waves reach the eardrum in the middle ear
- The middle ear passes the sounds to the inner ear
- The inner ear sends the sound information to the brain
- The brain interprets the sounds
Caring for the Ears
- Avoid loud sounds from radio or television
- Do not insert sharp objects into your ears
- Do not let water enter your ears when bathing or swimming
- Do not remove ear wax (it protects the ear from dust)
- Visit the ear clinic regularly for check-ups
Sense organs help us detect changes in our environment and respond appropriately. If any sense organ is damaged, we may lose important abilities. For example, damage to the ears can cause deafness, and damage to the eyes can cause blindness.
In everyday life in Tanzania, we use our sense organs constantly. For example, when you go to the market in Morogoro to buy mbamba (fish) or mboga (vegetables), you use your eyes to check if the food is fresh, your nose to smell if it is good, and your tongue to taste a small piece if the seller allows. This helps you choose the best quality food for your family.
