Basic properties of exponential functions

An exponential function is written in the form f(x)=axf(x) = a^x, where aa is a constant base of the function and xx is a variable called the exponent.

The base of the function is any positive real number. The most frequently used bases are base 10 (f(x)=10xf(x) = 10^x) and base ee (f(x)=exf(x) = e^x), where ee is the Naperian constant, approximately equal to 2.71828.

  1. If a>0a > 0, then ax>0a^x > 0.
  2. axay=ax+ya^x \cdot a^y = a^{x+y}
  3. ax/ay=axya^x / a^y = a^{x-y}
  4. (ab)x=axbx(ab)^x = a^x \cdot b^x
  5. (ax)y=axy(a^x)^y = a^{xy}
  6. ax/ax=axx=a0=1a^x / a^x = a^{x-x} = a^0 = 1
  7. ax=1/axa^{-x} = 1 / a^x
