Application of Genetics

Determination of blood groups genetically. Genetics is often applied to blood grouping. Blood grouping is very important in human life as it enables determination of blood groups so that donor blood can be transfused to needy patients (recipients) without agglutination (clotting) or causing any adverse reaction.

Possible combinations of blood type alleles. Blood plasma is packed with proteins called antibodies. The body produces a wide variety of antibodies that will recognize and attack foreign molecules that may enter the body from the outside world.

Plant and animal breeding. The process of choosing animals and plants with certain desired qualities such as increased yields, tolerance to drought, resistance to disease and faster growth is referred to as artificial selection.

Genetic counselling. Genetic counselling is the giving of professional advice and information about inherited disorders and diseases so as to help people make informed decisions.

Genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is the process of manually adding new DNA to an organism.
